FAQ

What is acupuncture? How does it work?

Acupuncture is the insertion into the human body of fine needles at one or more acupuncture points located along meridians and channels in order to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. It has a history of thousands of years and it is an important component of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The meridians and channels are pathways in which energy of the human body are circulated. This covers the internal organs and extends over the body exterior, forming a network that links the tissues and organs into an organic whole. Needles inserted on points along these meridians influence the energy that flows to the internal organs in order to affect the function of these organs.

Although acupuncture does have a direct effect on the nervous system and circulatory system, the meridian system is a distinct system of its own. Disorder of this energy system can cause illness, therefore by balancing this system the body naturally heals itself.

Does acupuncture hurt?

These hair-thin needles are gently inserted into specific points on the body. Skilled acupuncturists can place these tiny needles into the skin with very little or no discomfort to the patient.

How can energy have a healing effect on the body?

Energy permeates all parts of the human body. If the movement of energy ceases, the vital activities of the human body will also cease. Abundant energy is the basis of good health, while weakness of energy over a long period may cause illness. It is for this reason that acupuncture is recommended as a preventative measure in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

How will I feel during the treatment?

Once the needles have been placed lie quietly and relax. In certain treatments, acupuncture can be quite relaxing and you may even fall asleep. One scientific explanation of this is the release of endorphins during acupuncture.  Endorphins are the body’s natural pain killers.
